When most people think of custom snare drums, they think about wood types, hardware choices, and maybe a unique finish. But at Radius Drums, there’s another layer that sets our builds apart: laser engraving.
It’s not just about adding a logo or a name. It’s about turning a drum into a canvas — a piece of functional art that’s as visually striking as it is sonically powerful.
If you’ve seen a Radius drum with intricate designs burned into the shell, you’ve probably wondered: How is that even done? Let me walk you through it.
How I Got Into Laser Engraving
Laser engraving wasn’t part of the original plan when I started building drums. It was a gradual evolution.
I’d always been curious about laser engravers — the precision, the possibilities, the way they could add detail that’s impossible to achieve by hand. But it wasn’t until I figured out how to successfully engrave drum shells that I realized this could be a defining feature of Radius Drums.
In the custom drum world, there are a lot of talented builders. Stave construction, high-quality tonewoods, premium hardware — these are all things that other builders do well. I needed something that would make Radius instantly recognizable. Something that would make people stop scrolling and say, “Wait, what is that?”
Laser engraving became that thing.
The Process: Precision Meets Creativity
Here’s how it works.
I do all the engraving in-house using an Ortur laser engraver. Through trial and error (and plenty of mistakes), I’ve learned that the best time to engrave is after the clear coat goes on. This gives me the cleanest, crispest image possible.
Yes, the laser burns through the finish and into the wood itself — but that’s part of the magic. The burn actually acts as a form of wood preservation, and the contrast between the darkened engraving and the natural wood creates a striking visual effect.
The process isn’t always easy. Getting the image sized just right, positioning the shell perfectly, and ensuring the engraving wraps seamlessly around the curve of the drum — all of that takes time and precision. But when the result is something unique and stunning, the challenge is absolutely worth it.
What I’ve Engraved: From Logos to Full-Shell Art
Over the years, I’ve engraved everything from simple logos to full-shell designs that cover nearly every inch of the drum.
Custom Requests
If a customer has a specific vision — whether it’s their band logo, a memorial image, or a tribute to something meaningful — I can bring it to life. One of my favorite builds was a Legend of Zelda snare featuring the iconic Triforce and other game symbols engraved into a vibrant green maple shell. It’s a drum that speaks to both drummers and gamers, and it’s one of the most unique pieces I’ve ever built.
I’ve also done drums with cherry engravings on a cherry wood shell (because why not?) and custom memorial pieces that hold deep personal meaning for the customer.
The Illusions Series
Last year, I created a series called Illusions — drums engraved with 3D optical tricks and geometric patterns that wrap all the way around the shell. These aren’t just logos slapped on the side. These are full-shell designs that require engraving one small section at a time, carefully aligning each piece to create a seamless, mind-bending visual.
The Illusions drums push the boundaries of what’s possible with laser engraving on drums. They’re conversation starters, collector’s items, and proof that a snare drum can be a true work of art.
What Makes Radius Different
Most custom drum builders who use lasers stick to simple engravings — a logo here, a name there. And that’s fine. But at Radius, I take it further.
I love high levels of detail. I love the challenge of creating something that’s never been done before. And I love the idea that every Radius drum is not just an instrument, but a piece of visual storytelling.
Full-shell coverage. Intricate designs. Custom artwork. Memorial tributes. Video game references. Optical illusions. If you can imagine it, I can probably engrave it.
And because I do everything in-house, I’m not outsourcing to a third party or limiting what’s possible. If a design is going to be challenging, I’m here for it — because the payoff is a drum that’s truly one of a kind.
Why Laser Engraving Works So Well on Drums
Here’s the thing: drums are already beautiful. The natural grain of woods like walnut, cherry, and purpleheart is stunning on its own. But laser engraving adds another dimension.
It allows you to personalize your drum in a way that’s permanent, precise, and visually striking. It turns a high-quality instrument into something that’s uniquely yours — whether that’s your band logo, a tribute to someone you’ve lost, a nod to your favorite video game, or an abstract design that just looks cool.
And because the engraving is burned into the wood itself, it’s not going to peel, fade, or wear off over time. It’s part of the drum forever.
See It for Yourself
If you’re curious about what’s possible with laser-engraved drums, check out the shop or follow along on Instagram at @radiusdrums. I’m constantly experimenting with new designs, and I love sharing the process.
And if you’ve got an idea for a custom engraving — whether it’s a logo, a memorial, a pop culture reference, or something completely out there — reach out. Let’s talk about it. I love a good creative challenge.
Because at the end of the day, Radius Drums isn’t just about building great-sounding snares. It’s about building drums that are as visually unforgettable as they are musically powerful.
Let’s make something amazing together.
